This section contains examples
of the greeting card illustrations I've done over the years. I was one
of the original members of American Greetings' Alternative Cards team,
and continue to work for them even as styles and trends change. Formed
in the early 1990s, the Alternative Cards department was created in
order to meet a growing market trend for contemporary humor as well as
to offer a more spontaneous and less commercial look. Some of the
middlemen were foregone in the planning process, so the artists were
allowed greater creative freedom.
In this section you'll find
examples of humorous illustration, spoof art, cartooning, caricatures,
masculine, feminine, warm n' fuzzy as well as contemporary illustration
styles. Most of these were done at a fairly rapid turnaround time. I
approach each assignment as an art director would: "what kind of style
might be best to convey the tone of the copy?"
People often ask me if I also
wrote the cards that I've designed. In most cases, no -- they also
employ a staff of full-time writers. However, everyone is encouraged to
contribute. (Cards that I've also written are marked with an asterisk.)
